CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has given a lengthy and candid interview to Howard Stern, in which he discusses everything from his career as a child model through to why he won’t be inheriting anything from his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt. The interview is a bit of a coup for Stern, as Cooper has previously revealed very little about his private life.
Cooper spoke about his days as a child model, which he did between the ages of 10 and 13, modeling for brands such as Calvin Klein and Macy’s. He gave it up after a male photographer offered him $2,500 for sex.
“He somehow got my phone number, called me up and offered me money. It so freaked me out. I never told anyone – I just stopped [modeling]… I was 13 years old, I wasn’t even thinking about sex with anyone.”
Discussing his sexuality, Cooper revealed that had known that he was gay ever since he was 5 years old, and only found it difficult for a few years in his early teens. He came out to his friends while he was in high school, and finally told his mother when he was in college. Cooper also spoke about his boyfriend, Benjamin Maisani, who Cooper has been with for five years. Apparently Maisani, who owns a few bars in Manhattan, doesn’t travel with Cooper when he reports from dangerous areas. It would seem that the couple are monogamous though, Cooper claiming to be “a traditional guy.”
Cooper also announced that he doesn’t expect to inherit any money from his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, a railroad heiress-turned-designer who is estimated to be worth $200 million. Cooper described inherited money as “an initiative sucker… a curse.”
“Who has inherited a lot of money that has gone on to do things in their own life? From the time I was growing up, if I felt that there was some pot of gold waiting for me, I don’t know that I would’ve been so motivated.”
